Create the Environment

Create the Environment

Creatives can sometimes seem like a drag on business performance. Catering to those that think outside the box might be frustrating to those with a bottom-line focus. However, innovations from companies like Google and Apple would be impossible without fostering the right environment for creatives to breakthrough and revolutionize the industry. The buzz of a creative workspace isn’t just a nice option to have, it’s becoming a necessity to thrive. Developing that environment is possible with a few key tips.

Keep Them Curious – “I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious” – Albert Einstein. There’s one commonality creatives share, and that’s an eagerness to learn something. Align your workplace with that mindset, and innovation blossoms. Inspire inquisitiveness. Provide stimulus.

Arm Them Smartly– Make sure the best tools are in place for the job. The right employees need the right equipment to support them in their design and development work. It might seem like an expensive investment, but the best work is done with the best tools.

Be Diverse – Diversity in this case doesn’t just mean in the traditional sense. Of course an environment filled with various backgrounds and orientations should be completely welcome, but a diversity of thought and perspective should be welcome as well. Homogenous ‘groupthink’ can stop creativity dead in its tracks. Different ideas need to flourish, not be shot down by an always-agreeing committee.

Positive Thoughts – A happy office is a productive office, and that’s especially true for creatives. An environment of cutthroat politics and fending for yourself is diametrically opposed to harmony. That’s not to say the workplace should be motivation-free, but coaching and collaboration beats forced pressure every day. A positive outlook widens your scope of view and enhances the motivation to solve problems and create results.

Just Ask – Want to know how to foster an environment for creatives? Ask them for feedback. These inherently curious and insightful folks are bound to have inventive suggestions for optimum production. Try to create a cohesive plan based on their response and ideas that will cultivate innovation and outside the box thinking.
