Don’t Get Discouraged

Working as a freelance artist sounds like a dream job, right? Setting your own hours, working from home or a coffee shop, and making an amazing hourly wage seems like a no-brainer. And it can be, once you establish yourself as a valuable asset to clients. But that doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a tough racket to break into, and artists can get discouraged when the work doesn’t appear right away. Sometimes it seems like being a freelancer is a losing proposition. But take solace in the fact that just about every contract worker worth their salt once thought the same thing. So keep in mind the following points when lack of work or acknowledgement gets you down.

Take Commitment Inventory – As we said, you’re not the first freelancer to get discouraged. What kept others going is the commitment and passion not to fail. If your heart isn’t into the early grind, then maybe it’s time to find another area of expertise. No harm, no foul. It takes a certain amount of intestinal fortitude to succeed as a freelancer. Make sure you’ve got it.

Set Realistic Goals – Make sure you aren’t overestimating expectations. Setting a realistic plan of action will keep you from getting discouraged, rather than feeling down when unattainable goals aren’t met. Create work goals, financial requirements, and time commitments that are realistic for someone in your position of experience (or lack thereof).

Make Your Own Luck – Ready to work? Good. Do it harder than anyone else. Freelancing is hustling, so take every opportunity to make new connections, expand your portfolio, and market yourself like crazy. Make sure your website is on point and showcasing your best stuff. Write or design for the experience alone if necessary, it can only help in the long run. Doubling down on hard work and time commitment is the way to make your own luck. Be persistent! If you’re gonna be a bear, be a grizzly.
