Freelancing 101

Working as a creative freelancer can be a rewarding career option. In today’s uncertain business world, the flexibility of freelancing means not having to be “tied” to a desk job. It can also bring variety to the types of work done, improving and enhancing your skillset. However, there are some realities to be faced when embarking on this career choice. Let’s take a look at some of the ways to smartly navigate the sometimes bumpy road to success as a creative freelancer.

Sometimes the beginning of this road is the toughest stretch you’ll face. Freelancing doesn’t just happen. It can be slow and grueling work. If you’ve got prior experience in your chosen field, consider that a great start. Utilize the contacts you’ve made along the way to the fullest. If you have no experience, you’ll need to do beg, borrow or steal to build your portfolio. Designing or writing for free on a blog or website might not be fun, but it’s necessary in a lot of cases. Do anything to get as much work and experience under your belt as possible.

And that means having to sell yourself. As a freelancer, the brand you’re highlighting is you. Get in front of as many prospective clients as you can! Even if you don’t land every job, word gets around. You might ask yourself “Self, how do I get my foot in the door to all of these opportunities this mope is talking about?”. Well actually, there’s a way…

Let Creatives On Call help! That’s right, a freelancer’s best friend can be the agency that guides them into the opportunities they’re seeking. Creatives On Call works with artists to create a detailed profile, matching their skillsets and career desires with the right projects available. Relying on recruiting pros who know how daunting it is to break into freelancing, is an invaluable source for the ins and outs of what can be a much different business model.

How different? Well, as a freelancer you’ll be in charge of your own finances. This means tracking your own hours on each project being worked on. Creatives On Call can also help on that front, with easy timecard entry and client approval (this might not seem too important, but speaking as an experienced freelancer – IT IS!). Creatives On Call also has your appropriate tax info on file, to help when the IRS comes calling each year.

So there are definite obstacles to overcome when deciding to work as a freelancer. But with the right mindset (hard work!) and the right help (Creatives On Call!) you can start down the road, and even see future success on the horizon!
