Update Your Skillset!

Creatives know that the more skills you have, the more desirable you look to clients in need of work. Like a toolbox full of useful items, an expanded profile or resume that highlights a variety of experience and skills is invaluable. A great, updated profile might not guarantee you a job, but a poor, out of date profile will almost certainly remove you from serious consideration. So let’s see how we can get your skills to pay the bills updated, showcasing just how tall you stand above the rest!

Define Your Path – Before updating and expanding skills, have a clear understanding of how to acquire them. You need to make sure your established skills can lead into the territory desired. Thinking outside the box for a new skill is great, but remember not to wander too far. Think of your professional skills as rungs in a ladder. You can’t skip to the top, each step must be taken one at a time.

Expand Horizons – Once you have a plan, it’s time to start taking a look at all the ways to expand your skillsets. Designers with a more industrial background can dip their toes in a creative setting. Writers with long form print experience should try their hand at email and digital formats. Remember, the objective is to acquire and update your professional skillset. Smaller gigs or working just for the exposure might seem counterproductive in the short term, but the experience you gain definitely rounds out your talents as a prospective freelancer.

Take Regular Inventory – As you expand work to include new experiences, make sure you take note of everything. Even tasks that might seem secondary can count as an update in skillset. Did you get pulled off of an assignment writing emails to help on a project dealing with print catalogs? Note it. Were you asked to load the images you’ve been tasked to retouch on a content management platform? Note it. Take note of any and all experience gained when working on an assignment, not just the stated position for which you were hired.

Let The Experts At COC Do Their Thing – The best way to update your skillset is to rely on the experts. Creatives On Call can help showcase those skills you’ve acquired by making sure your profile stands out. Working with COC on a regular basis means your skillset is always up to date, handled by the pros, and in front of clients that are looking talented artists like you!
