Workload Management During The Holidays

The holiday season is upon us! And while that means chilly weather and lots of great food, it also means a hectic schedule and less time to devote to your daily routine. The holidays can be stressful for a freelancer, especially when the focus shifts away from work and toward additional family and home duties. Taking the entire holiday season off might seem tempting, but losing work completely might lead to missed opportunities down the road from employers looking for someone more reliable. And unless your last name is Scrooge, that extra holiday income comes in handy! So let’s focus on a few tips to help keep that holiday workload manageable.

Check the Calendar – Set your schedule as far ahead as you can for the holidays. That way you can plan other activities around your workload, and not vice versa. Shopping, relatives, cooking, and other activities are much more likely to be unplanned affairs, so it’s good to know how much time you’ll need to devote to projects. A well thought out schedule also means you have deadlines already mapped out, thus keeping priorities in check.

Be Flexible – Now that you have your schedule all planned out, be ready to rip it up and throw it away. It’s the holidays. There’s bound to be something that pops up and eats away at work time. Be accepting of that fact and roll with it whenever possible. Don’t lose sight that the holidays are supposed to be a fun time of fellowship with your friends and family. As long as you’re able to squeeze in some extra time here and there to make a deadline, go ahead with that snowball fight against the neighbors.
